Planning the intro video for Gen Propel's Skillshare course

Today, I wrote the key concepts and talking points for the (1) Intro and the (2) Class Project of our Skillshare course.

One reason we decided to create on Skillshare is so we can use their resources to create a focused, digestible, and actionable course.

Thus far, it has been effective. For example, they recommend courses that are (just!) 60 minutes of pre-recorded videos broken down into a series of short 2-5 minute videos. Sounds simple, but this mental model helps not only with creating focused and engaged learning, it also makes the creation process less overwhelming for me.

One such resource is the Skillshare x Intro Video Planning Template. Given the prompt, “What key skills will a student learn?" and a small box to write the answer in, I was ‘forced’ to articulate the top 3 skills we help students learn and why they matter.

Top 3 skills:

• Mindset - Your mindset informs your communication. That is, what you write in your LinkedIn profile, how you reach out, and what you talk about on calls. Landing a job is 100% communication.
• System - Project 100 is the system we teach you to use. You need a system so you’re not randomly sending applications and hoping for the best. You know what to aim for, what exactly to do everyday to move towards your goals, and when you’re getting off track.
• Advanced LinkedIn Search - How to find anyone on LinkedIn and analyze their profile, so you know how to reach out in a way that makes people want to help you.

Today, I discovered these printable Momentum Planners. They've helped me break this project down into smaller, doable tasks, preventing overwhelm.

I’m training myself to feel happy when I do even 30mins of focused, important work. This feels short. But in 30 minutes, I completed the talking points for the intro (which is the most important section, so it’s the most elaborate of the sections) and the class project.

I’m learning that I might be able to complete 3 chunks every 30 mins. So I only need three more 30min chunks to complete all the talking points for the course.

What is this post? I was rereading Show Your Work! by Austin Kleon. I’ve decided I want this blog to be about showing my work and attracting people who share the same interests. It will not be about any specific niche.

As Austin writes, "Imagine: Spending the majority of your time, energy, and attention practicing a craft, learning a trade, or running a business, while also allowing for the possibility that your work might attract a group of people who share your interests. All you have to do is show your work."
