Gen Propel Skillshare course: Introduction

From yesterday's studying YouTube Success with MKBHD...

He scripts 98% of what he will say on camera, in order to share as many useful things in the shortest amount of time possible. He literally writes the whole thing, from the beginning to "thanks for watching."

...as well as remembering that Skillshare recommends instructors to email them the outline for approval... I decided to clean up the outline.

For each section, I will write one sentence summing up the main point of the section, then write 3-5 full sentence bullet points to support the main point.

I did this for the intro and ended up scripting the whole thing. I'm very happy with the output and now feel confident that I can film this section without going all over the place. It wasn't even that much work!

Who are you and what's your background?

My name is Chiara Cokieng.

I’m a Co-Founder at Gen Propel, where we help knowledge workers learn the skills to find work and move abroad.

I was born and raised in the Philippines, but now live and work in Berlin, Germany as a product manager in tech.

In the last 8 years, I’ve worked for 6 companies based out of 4 countries, including Germany, the U.S., Hungary, and the Philippines.

I often joke that job hunting is my best skill, and job staying is my worst.

What skill level is required for this class?

The first thing is, you don’t need to speak the local language of the country you are aiming to find work in.

Most countries have English-speaking jobs in international companies, and in this course, you’ll learn how to find them.

So: Knowing the local language is helpful, but not necessary to land a job.

The second thing: You don’t need to have an existing network in your target country.

In this course, you’ll learn how to build this network from scratch.

Finally, this course will equip you with job hunting skills, but you need to have the actual job skills to perform the jobs to which you will be applying.

You might be thinking, “Am I good enough at my work to land a job abroad?” Have previous bosses commended you for your work? What about your colleagues?

It’s likely you are more than good enough, you just don’t know it yet.

Moreover, you likely have not figured out how to communicate how good you are to the right people. In other words, you haven’t learned job hunting skills.

This is what you will learn in this class: How to connect with the right people and communicate your value to them.

What this course will not teach: This course will focus on landing interviews, which for most job seekers abroad, is the most difficult part of the process. Interviewing, negotiating, and country-specific issues are beyond the scope of this course.

Who is the class made for?

This class is made for knowledge workers looking to find work and move abroad.

This process has worked for people in tech, for example, software engineers and product managers. It has also worked for people in advertising and even lawyers.

Knowledge workers with 3 to 5 years of experience in your home country will find great success.

The primary goal of this course is to help you land interviews for jobs abroad.
